Natural wonders of our region

Surrounded by two of the Australia’s premier World Heritage sites - the ancient rainforest of the Wet Tropics and the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, Martin & Julia live in one of the most diverse and amazing regions in Australia. Even the great Australian outback is not too far away to the west!

The Wet Tropics region of North Queensland only covers 0.26% of the Australian landmass but it has a range of different habitats and the richest varieties of plants and animals in Australia. In addition to over 1200 different types of trees, the region has around 20% of the all Australia’s reptiles, 30% of the amphibians and marsupials, 40% of birds and freshwater fish and almost 60% of the bats and butterflies!

Just off the coast, is the largest coral reef system in the world and one of the world’s best wildlife spectacles - the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. These reefs are made up of over 400 species of coral that support over 2000 different fish, seven different marine turtles, 4000 species of molluscs and countless other invertebrates.

Some of the wildlife highlights of this region include:

  • Sitting quietly on the bank of a rainforest stream listening to birds while watching platypus forage.
  • Spotlighting in dense rainforest at night searching for secretive animals such as gliders, possums, tree frogs, geckos and maybe a tree kangaroo.
  •

  • Going on a journey from the magical rainforest through to the dry eucalypt woodland on the western side of the range.
  • Swimming in the cool rainforest waters.
  • Walking through ancient rainforest along spectacular coastline.
  • Cruising down the Daintree River hoping to spot Estuarine Crocodiles and other wildlife.
  • Snorkelling or diving with colourful fish, coral and turtles on the famous Great Barrier Reef.
  • Exploring the huge collection of Australian birds and other wildlife at Rainforest Habitat.
  • Getting up close and personal with a fascinating flying fox or a sugar glider.
